Making Tax Digital 2026: A Simple Guide for UK Creatives

Let’s be honest: you didn’t get into film, music, or design because you had a burning passion for spreadsheets. You’re here to create, to perform, to build things that didn’t exist yesterday. But as every freelancer knows, the "business" side of being a creative has a way of tapping you on the shoulder just when you’re in the flow.
And right now, HMRC is doing more than just tapping. They’re changing the entire way you’ll handle your taxes.
It’s called Making Tax Digital (MTD), and if you’re a UK-based creative, it’s about to become a huge part of your life. While "tax reform" sounds like a great reason to take a very long nap, this one is actually important. From April 2026, the rules of the game are shifting.
But don't panic. We’re Creative and Numbers, and we’re here to translate the jargon into something that actually makes sense for your studio, your set, or your stage.
Understanding the "Big Shift" in 2026
For decades, the rhythm was simple: you’d work all year, scramble to find your receipts in January, and file one big Self Assessment. It was stressful, sure, but it only happened once a year.
MTD changes that. Essentially, HMRC wants to move away from paper (and manual spreadsheets) and move toward a real-time digital system. Instead of one big "ta-da!" at the end of the year, you’ll be giving HMRC smaller updates throughout the year using specific software.
Why? They say it reduces errors. We say it’s a lot to manage if you’re already juggling three commissions and a tour. But if we get ahead of it now, it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. In fact, for many of our clients, having an expert in their corner actually makes their business feel more professional and less like a pile of "to-do" lists.

Navigating the Thresholds: Do You Fall Into the 2026 Bracket?
Not everyone has to jump into the deep end at the same time. HMRC is rolling this out in stages based on how much you’re bringing in.
From April 2026: If your total self-employed or property income is over £50,000, you’re in the first wave. This includes your gross income (everything you earn before expenses).
From April 2027: If you earn between £30,000 and £50,000, your turn starts a year later.
If you’re earning under £30,000, the government is still "reviewing" how MTD will look for you, so you can breathe a temporary sigh of relief: but the digital wave is coming for everyone eventually.
It’s worth noting that these thresholds apply to your total income. So, if you’re a session musician making £30k and you also rent out a studio space for £25k, you’re over the £50k limit and need to be ready for 2026.
Embracing the "Quarterly Update" Lifestyle
This is the part that usually makes people’s eyes widen. Under MTD, you’ll need to send a digital update of your business income and expenses to HMRC every three months.
Wait! Before you close this tab: it’s not four full tax returns a year.
Think of these as "check-ins." You won't be doing complex tax adjustments or claiming every single relief every quarter. You’re simply sending a summary of your digital records so HMRC can see a running total of what you’re earning.
The benefits?
No more January surprises. You’ll know exactly how much tax you owe as you go.
Better cash flow. You won't accidentally spend your tax bill on a new Leica or a vintage synth.
Real-time support. Because we can see your data in real-time, we can offer essential tax advice when it actually matters, not six months after the tax year has ended.

Why Manual Spreadsheets are Joining the History Books
If you’re still keeping track of your income in a notebook or a basic Excel sheet that isn't "bridged" to HMRC, that’s going to have to change. To comply with MTD, you must use functional compatible software.
This is where many creatives feel out of their depth. Choosing between Xero, QuickBooks, or FreeAgent feels a bit like choosing a camera body: you want the one that feels intuitive and doesn't get in the way of your actual work.
At Creative and Numbers, we don’t just tell you to "get software" and leave you to it. We provide dedicated software training. We’ll show you how to snap photos of receipts on your phone while you’re on location so they automatically sync with your accounts. No more shoeboxes. No more lost coffee shop VAT receipts. Just a clean, digital flow.
Managing the Transition as a Creative Business
Being a creative professional usually means your income is anything but "standard." One month you’re flush with project fees; the next, you’re waiting for three different production houses to pay their invoices.
Standard accountants often struggle with this. They’re used to 9-to-5 businesses with predictable costs. But as a specialist accountant for creatives, we understand that your expenses look different: audition travel, studio hire, agent fees, and equipment insurance are the lifeblood of your work.
Transitioning to MTD is the perfect time to audit how you’re running things. Are you still a sole trader when you should be a limited company? Are you missing out on specific creative tax reliefs? We use the MTD shift as a springboard to make your whole financial setup more efficient.

Preparing Your Studio for the April 2026 Deadline
April 2026 might feel like it’s a long way off: in "creative time," that’s practically a lifetime. But trust us, the best time to start moving toward digital records is now.
If you wait until March 2026 to figure out how to use accounting software, you’re going to be stressed. If you start now, by the time the deadline hits, it will just be another button you click four times a year.
Here is our "No-Stress" MTD Checklist:
Check your income totals. Look at your last two years. Are you consistently hitting that £50k mark?
Ditch the paper. Start using an app to log your expenses. Even if you aren't on "official" MTD software yet, getting into the habit of digital logging is half the battle.
Talk to a specialist. Don't just go to any high-street accountant. Go to someone who knows why a "gaffer" isn't a type of fish.
Set up a separate business bank account. If you’re still mixing your Netflix subscription with your prop purchases, MTD will be a nightmare. Separate them now.
Mastering the New System with Creative and Numbers
Our whole "Beyond Numbers" philosophy is about looking at the person behind the art. We know that tax deadlines: especially ones as big as MTD: can feel like a weight on your chest. Our job is to take that weight off so you can get back to your studio.
We offer clear, simple support. No "per hour" hidden fees that make you scared to call us, and no condescending talk about why you haven't memorized the HMRC handbook. We’re your partners in this. Whether you need help mastering bookkeeping or you just want someone to handle the quarterly submissions so you never have to think about them, we’ve got you.

Unlocking Freedom Through Better Financial Habits
It sounds counterintuitive, doesn't it? That more government reporting could lead to more freedom? But here’s the truth: most creatives spend more time worrying about tax than they do actually doing it.
By embracing a digital, real-time system, you reclaim that mental space. You’ll know where you stand. You’ll know your budget for your next project. And you’ll know that when April 2026 rolls around, you won't be one of the thousands of people panicking at the last minute.
You’ve spent years honing your craft. We’ve spent years honing ours. Let’s make this transition as smooth as a perfect location find.
